Search engine optimisation sounds technical, but the basics are simple. Nobody can promise a number one ranking, but you can remove the obstacles that stop good pages from being found.
1. A unique title for every page
Keep it under about 60 characters. Put the main idea first and your brand last. Example: Birthday cakes in Indiranagar | Sweet Crumb Bakery.
2. A meta description that earns clicks
This is the grey text under the title in search results. Write one clear sentence of 140 to 160 characters describing what the page offers.
3. One H1 per page
Your main heading should describe the page. Use H2 and H3 for sections under it, in order.
4. Speed on phones
Compress images, avoid heavy scripts and test on mobile data. Slow pages lose visitors and rank lower.
5. Image descriptions
Add short alt text to every meaningful image. It helps people using screen readers and gives search engines context.
6. Clean URLs and internal links
Use readable page names like /pricing and link related pages together.
7. A sitemap and robots file
A sitemap lists your pages so Google can find them. Submit it in Google Search Console.
8. Structured data
Extra code that tells search engines your business name, type, address and FAQs. It can lead to richer search results.
9. Real content, regularly
Answer the questions your customers ask. A blog gives you more pages to be found by, and more reasons for people to trust you.
Good SEO is mostly good manners: clear pages, honest titles and fast loading.
